Why open source?

The goal is to eliminate the bus factor as much as possible, which is also the reason why the IRC server supports linking. If somebody else cares about this topic and wants to keep going, they can help or continue from where it stopped. Open source is currently the best way to develop anything really, which is finally being recognized.

What about expenses/profits?

Thankfully running an IRC server isn't that expensive.

Regarding profits, focusing purely on them ruins this world, maybe it's time to start changing the mindset. If people wish and when the option is available, they can always donate/sponsor if they feel it's worth it, but requiring that upfront or blasting everything with ads, who wants that?
